Would Luke Evans Play a Gay James Bond? – Pride.com
Luke Evans is a tall, handsome, and physically fit actor from the United Kingdom. He is also currently 43 years old, which means that he checks all of the boxes to be considered to play James Bond on the big screen as actor Daniel Craig retires from the 007 franchise.
Well, except that Evans would be the first out gay actor to play Bond if he were to get cast for the role.
During a recent interview with Bustle, Evans was asked about the possibility of replacing Craig as James Bond on the big screen. Generally speaking, the Beauty and the Beast actor isn’t sure if audiences care enough about the character to be excited about a gay actor bringing him to life.
“I don’t know what the current temperature is with audiences,” Evans noted, “whether they care enough to worry about what James Bond does in the bedroom.” The actor then added: “I don’t think it really matters at all to the character if I’m really honest.”
Evans’ answer to the publication appears to dismiss the casting speculation, but his response doesn’t entirely reject the possibility that he could be picked as the next person to play 007. Overall, Evans said that he’s unsure about whether his casting would “matter,” but didn’t rule out that it might be a good choice.
Even though Evans feels this way, one would be remiss not to note that there’s always been a lot of debate concerning each new casting of James Bond over the years. For instance, Hollywood made a huge fuss in the 2000s when Craig became the first blond actor to play the character… and that was just the color of his hair!
To Evans’ point, the 007 franchise is not as popular today as it once was, so people might care less about the identity of the actor playing Bond. In turn, this also means that it’s the perfect time to shake things up and revive this franchise with a bold casting choice – such as casting an out gay actor in the role.
