Willie Gay reaches plea deal prior to Chiefs training camp – Arrowhead Addict
Linebacker Willie Gay reached a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid any jail time stemming from his January domestic dispute.
Willie Gay, one of the Kansas City Chiefs‘ emerging stars at linebacker and a key figure on a young defensive unit, has entered into a plea deal following charges related to alleged property damage that occurred six months ago, per TMZ Sports.
Back in January, Gay was arrested on the Wednesday before the Chiefs faced the Buffalo Bills in the 2021 postseason following a domestic dispute with the mother of his child.
As noted at the time of his arrest:
A rep for Gay says the football player was arrested after he broke a vacuum during an argument with the mother of his child.
“Willie was at his son’s house visiting,” Maxx Lepselter said in a statement Thursday morning. “He and the mother got into an argument during which he broke her vacuum.”
Lepselter insisted the altercation did not turn physical … adding, “No one was touched, nothing happened beyond broken appliance.”
“She called cops about it and they took him in on misdemeanor destruction of property of less than $1,000.”
Gay has finally reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in order to avoid trial and additional jail time. According to court documents, Gay has entered a diversion program. This program requires him to participate in mental health counseling, submit to drug and alcohol testing, small fines, and restitution (which is a payment to the victim). He will remain in this program for approximately 12 months and if he completes all requirements, will have the case dismissed by prosecutors at the end.
This is a fairly common type of plea agreement for minor criminal charges and for those that do not have a criminal history. Often these plea agreements carry with them the hope of rehabilitation rather than punishment. The hope is that the individual can learn from the experience, keep themselves out of trouble for a period of time, and ultimately leads to no further criminal violations.
Assuming Gay continues to follow the program, he will find himself free and clear one year from now. However, if Gay fails to follow directives, he may face jail time, additional charges, and additional fines/fees.
No doubt, this is a great outcome for Gay and puts a distraction behind him as we enter the hot, humid training camp in St. Joseph. Gay is expected to start alongside Nick Bolton as an enforcing linebacker in the revamped Chiefs defense as the Chiefs look to defend their AFC West crown.
