White House to host thousands and have musical guests for gay marriage bill signing – Washington Examiner

The White House is preparing to host thousands of people on the South Lawn to celebrate President Joe Biden’s signing of the marriage equality bill into law.

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre recalled Monday how Biden “made history’ in 2012 when, as vice president, he became the highest-ranking U.S. government official to endorse same-sex marriage.

“The Respect for Marriage Act helps ensure that proposition is fully realized in the United States,” Jean-Pierre told reporters. “It will give peace of mind to millions of LGBTQI+ and interracial couples who will finally be guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled.”

Jean-Pierre declined to provide specifics on the special musical guests before Tuesday’s ceremony, but she underscored the measure’s broad support from Congress as it seeks to safeguard gay and interracial marriages.

“The president will be joined by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, as well as advocates and plaintiffs in marriage equality cases across the country,” she said. “The president will also note that there is much more work to be done to protect LGBTQI+ individuals … including passing the Equality Act.”

“This is a reminder, if I may add, how when we do reach across the aisle, there are things that we can get done, historic pieces of legislation that we can get done, and we have seen that under the president,” Jean-Pierre added.

Despite religious freedom concerns, the marriage bill gained traction on Capitol Hill after Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas welcomed legal challenges to substantive due process precedents similar to Roe v. Wade in his Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization‘s concurring opinion.
