Webb School-Bell Buckle football: Evan Gay named head coach – Tennessean

After coaching stints in Mississippi and Texas, Evan Gay has been named the new football coach at Webb-Bell Buckle.

Gay is a Murfreesboro native and was a senior on the first Blackman High team. He succeeds Kyle Turnbow. Turnbow resigned in February after coaching at Webb for two years.

Webb went 0-9 in 2021 and 3-15 over the past two years.

In his most recent stint, Gay was a teacher, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

“We are extremely pleased to have Evan as our head football coach and look forward to what he can accomplish leading Webb’s program,” Webb head of school Ken Cheeseman said in a release. “He has much experience in building relationships with young people in ways that allow him to teach and coach them to develop, build honor, integrity, and the pursuit of excellence.”

Gay left Tennessee in 2005 joining the army where he served two tours in Iraq. He began his coaching career in 2018 at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor as the Crusaders went 15-0 and won the NCAA Division III National Championship.

He was hired as the offensive coordinator for Covenant Christian Academy in Colleyville, Texas the following season and spent two seasons there on a team that went to the final four twice and went undefeated in 2020.

“The focus for Webb to be great at academics, arts, and athletics has ignited an exciting and positive atmosphere and culture on campus, and that was something of which I wanted my family to be a part,” Gay said. “I think this team has a lot of potential, and I am looking forward to getting to work and establishing a championship football program.”
