Watch the Trailer for ‘M3gan,’ the Gay Internet’s Latest Horror Obsession – Them
The M3gan trailer just brought the notion of chosen family to a whole new level.
If you haven’t already been introduced to our new favorite horror girlie, then feast your eyes on gay Twitter’s newest obsession: a malevolent AI-powered doll that seems destined to become a mega-popular 2023 Halloween costume.
The two-minute preview of the forthcoming Universal horror movie introduces us to Cady (Violet McGraw), a child who has been orphaned, and her aunt, Gemma (Allison Williams), who’s taking her in. Her aunt shows her “this project at work,” which ends up being a “perfect toy that would protect a kid from ever feeling lonely or sad.” That toy is the very uncanny valley M3gan, a blonde doll clad in a dress with a striped ribbon tied around her neck.
What follows is a montage of Katie and Megan bonding, to the tune of — what else — “It’s Nice to Have a Friend” by Taylor Swift. This all culminates in a tense dinner table scene of Gemma trying to tell Cady to eat her vegetables. M3gan helpfully chimes in, “Research shows if you force a child to eat vegetables, they’ll be less likely to choose those foods as adults.” When Gemma tries to turn M3gan off, the doll turns her head slowly and says, in what will undoubtedly serve as fodder for countless reaction GIFs, “I thought we were having a conversation.”
That’s where the trailer shifts into actual horror-movie territory, complete with an intense remix of “It’s Nice to Have a Friend.” But personally, I couldn’t help but find the more horrific aspects of the film deeply funny. I could not stop laughing at the scene in which M3gan starts barreling toward a child on all fours, or the brief clips of her dancing in a red hallway. I’m not alone in this, either, judging from the countless memes/fancams/etc. that instantly sprung forth from the ether.
