Wall Street Journal: Philly Is the “Sports Capital of the Universe” – Visit Philadelphia
Our time is now, Philly.
Maybe you’ve heard that our sports team are having a moment. Let’s count the ways:
- The Philadelphia Phillies are in the World Series right now.
- The Philadelphia Union are in the MLS Championship game this coming Saturday.
- The Philadelphia Eagles are undefeated at 7-0.
- The Philadelphia Flyers are off to a great start at 5-2-1.
- The Philadelphia 76ers … are working on it!
It’s not just the Philly faithful who are on board with our top-performing sports teams — it’s national media as well.
Case in point: Wall Street Journal writer Jason Gay’s recent article: “In Praise of Philadelphia, Sudden Paradise of Sports.”
That feels nice, no?
In the article, Gay comes right out and says what we’ve all been thinking: “Philadelphia’s the sports capital of the universe.”
Boom.
While Gay calls out five of Philly’s professional sports teams, he focuses mainly on the Eagles and Phillies.
For the Iggles: “The Eagles are rolling. They’re rolling so much that the NFL cognoscenti have accepted their rollingness.”
And: “The script has been flipped. Philadelphia’s not the underdog town, parrying their own low expectations and tired cheap shots about Santa Claus and snowballs. It’s very possible the road to the Lombardi will have to go through the Eagles’ noisy nest. In January. You want a piece of that crowd?”
As for the Fightin’s? They’ve “sprinkled magic dust on their city and the baseball playoffs.”
Gay ends his piece with a rhetorical: “Do you really want to bet against Philadelphia right now? I don’t.”
We don’t either — and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
