Virginia Lee Myers Virginia Lee Jenkins Myers, longtime Prince Georges’ County school teacher, precious mother and loving friend to all people and pets, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, at 1:48 a.m.
Virginia was born in Frostburg on July 6, 1931, and was the only child of the late Richard Glotfelty Jenkins and Helen Virginia Ritz Jenkins.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Russell Myers, in 2012.
She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Edward S. and Leora Glotfelty Jenkins, James Edward and Agnes Booth Ritz, with whom she lived during her childhood years, attending school at Bethel Township in Warfordsburg, Pa.
She was very proud of her English, Swiss, Welsh, and German heritage.
In addition, she is preceded in death by brother-in-law, Glen Gay; cousins who were like brothers and sisters, Dorothy Schultz Richardson, Dolores Ritz Ray, Wanda Lee Souders, Leon Ritz, Helen Jenkins Carter, and younger cousins, Cindy Feldstein and Jimmy Richardson.
She returned to Frostburg to attend school at Beall High School, graduating in 1949, and went on to receive a bachelor of science degree from Frostburg State University in 1953.
Her graduate work was done at University of Maryland and Bowie State University.
She absolutely loved being a certified reading teacher and teaching elementary school in Prince George’s County for 32 years, retiring in 1991.
Through the years, she was active with Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, coordinating the elementary division at First United Methodist Church in Hyattsville, helping with costumes, etc., for plays at Calvary Day School in Winston-Salem, N.C., and helping with the card ministry for her Sunday School class at Riverdale Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, where she was a member.
She later attended Lifepoint Church in Seneca, S.C., where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, the last year of her life.
Virginia Lee loved Jesus, her family and the USA.
She really enjoyed spending time with her family at home or on vacations to the Outer Banks and North Myrtle Beach.
Much of her time was spent reading, sinking her hands into the soil of her flower gardens, and traveling.
She also relished volunteering her time helping others with reading and learning new skills.
She was an avid sports fan, cheering on her favorite teams, the Maryland Terrapins, Baltimore Orioles, and Baltimore Ravens!
She is survived by her two sons, Eric Myers and wife, Lisa, of Crofton, and Alan Myers, of New Market; daughter, Mary Jo “Jody” Cross and her husband, Tim, of Seneca; three grandsons, Brett Myers, Blake Myers and Zachary Cross and his wife, Grayson Cross; two granddaughters, Emma Cross, Zoe Virginia Cross; one great-granddaughter, Zaniah Lee Myers; sister-in-law, Eleanor Myers Gay; nephews, Randy, Michael, Matthew (Kristy) Gay; and family members, James (Deidi) Ritz, Nancy (Denny) Mayo, Nancy (Michael) Gorman, James (Stacey) Carter, Ruth Ritz Seiders, Charlotte Burns, and all of their children.
Friends will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, MD 21532, Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021, from 2 to 3 p.m.
Funeral services will follow visitation Sunday at 3 p.m.
Interment will be privately held at Rocky Gap Veterans’ Cemetery.
