Verland Lee Barmore | News, Sports, Jobs – Evening Observer

Verland Lee Barmore, 91, went to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Nov. 14, 2021, in the hospital in Ocala, Fla., following an accidental fall, with the love of his life Janice E. Swanson Barmore by his side. They had just celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in September.

He was born in the town of Gerry on Jan. 25, 1930, the son of Merritt Barmore and Elsie Lehnen Barmore Ladow.

From an early age he was a hard worker, going to work at Sterlingworth Furniture Company in Jamestown at age 16. Later he joined his uncle Elwood Barmore, owner of Barmore-Sellstrom, where he worked in sales and served as the farm tire serviceman. He later owned the White Horse Inn in Cassadaga for several years before selling that business to begin Gay-Mark Tire and Wheel in a barn in 1970. This business grew to include a retread facility and mechanic bays and was passed on to his son. Larry Barmore when Verland retired.

He enjoyed farming both before and during his retirement, assisting his son, Russell Barmore, on his farm, first on Damon Hill in Gerry and then on Route 83 in Forestville until Russell’s death in a farm accident. He and Janice then relocated to Jamestown, while spending their winters in Florida. They moved permanently to Inverness, Fla., in 2018.

In addition to his wife, Verland is also survived by two sons: Larry L. (Carol) Barmore and Douglas A. (Kathy) Barmore Sr.; as well as 10 grandchildren: Kristen Barmore Brooks, Keith Barmore, Lori Gallivan, Bradley Ring, Douglas Barmore Jr., Jessica Hoitink, Derek Ring, Jeremy Barmore, Amber Barmore Gray and Clayton Barmore; along with great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers: Cecil (Barbara) Barmore and Dean (Judy) Barmore.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Darwin William Barmore, in 1958, as well as his son, Russell Barmore, in 2006; and a granddaughter, Michelle Barmore Bloom in 2009.

Verland will be remembered as one who was hard working, outgoing, helpful to everyone, and who enjoyed a wonderful life with family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him until we are reunited in Heaven.

A memorial service will be held at his church in Florida.

Condolences may be sent to the family through the Charles E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness, Fla., and memorials may be made to the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department, Gerry, N.Y
