Van Huffelen: Recognizing gay rights “in principle” is a matter for … – Curacao Chronicle
THE HAGUE – “Gay couples should be able to marry in all parts of the Kingdom,” State Secretary Van Huffelen replies to written questions from Roelien Kamminga, a member of the Dutch parliament for the VVD party.
But, she adds: respecting human rights is “in principle” a national matter for the autonomous countries. The reason for the parliamentary questions is the decision of the government of Curaçao to appeal against a conviction by the Court. The court ruled that Curaçao and Aruba violated their own legislation by discriminating against gay couples.
Van Huffelen has, she writes, contacted the Pisas cabinet about the matter. Dutch Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf of Education, Culture, and Science also raised the issue during his working visit to Curaçao and Aruba last week. Dutch Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius of Justice talked to representatives of the LGBTQ+ community when she was in Willemstad.
