Another pitcher’s duel?

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Braves left-hander Max Fried and Brewers righty Brandon Woodruff will try for another pitcher’s duel as Atlanta and Milwaukee play Game 2 of their NL Division Series.

Fried closed out the regular season in top form, going 3-0 with an 0.39 ERA in his final three starts.

Corbin Burnes and the Brewers edged Charlie Morton and the visiting Braves 2-1 in the opener, with Milwaukee getting both runs on Rowdy Tellez’s homer in the seventh inning off Morton.

In San Francisco, big league wins leader Julio Urías starts for the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NL Division Series against Kevin Gausman. The Giants took the first game last night, 4-0.

Urías went 20-3 with a 2.96 ERA — no one else in the majors posted more than 17 wins this season. He’ll be making his 19th postseason appearance and fourth start for the Dodgers.

Gausman will be making the first postseason start of his career.

Day off for ALDS teams

CHICAGO (AP) — Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and the Astros work out at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago after taking a 2-0 lead over the White Sox in the AL Division Series.

Chicago returns home trying to avoid a sweep in the best-of-five matchup. Manager Tony La Russa hasn’t yet announced a starter for Game 3 Sunday night. Rookie Luis Garcia starts for Houston.

The Rays and Red Sox head to Boston with their AL Division Series tied at a game apiece. Nathan Eovaldi will start Game 3 tomorrow for Boston. He allowed one run and four hits over 5 1/3 innings of Boston’s wild-card win over the Yankees.

Kevin Cash of the Rays hasn’t announced a starter for Sunday. He could go with right-hander Drew Rasmussen or opt for a bullpen day.

Gonzaga coach to miss games after DUI arrest

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Gonzaga coach Mark Few will miss two exhibition games and the first game of the regular season after he was arrested last month on suspicion of driving under the influence. The school made the announcement before the Bulldogs’ kickoff event.

Few will not be on the sideline for Gonzaga’s exhibition games on Oct. 31 against Eastern Oregon and Nov. 5 against Lewis-Clark State, and the regular-season opener on Nov. 9 versus Dixie State. Few’s first game will be Nov. 13 against Texas, a showdown of expected top-10 teams.

Few apologized for his “regretful decision.”

Packers place cornerback Jaire Alexander on injured reserve

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have placed star cornerback Jaire Alexander on injured reserve. The move means Alexander must miss at least the next three games.

Alexander hurt a shoulder in a 27-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Coach Matt LaFleur has said he’s hopeful that Alexander will avoid surgery and could “be back with us in a matter of weeks.” Alexander made the Pro Bowl and earned second-team honors in All-Pro balloting last season.

The Packers visit Cincinnati on Sunday in a matchup of teams with 3-1 records.

Willis won’t play, Walker activated

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. will not play Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers due to a nagging ankle injury he suffered in the season opener at Kansas City. After listing him as questionable, the Browns ruled out Wills before flying to California.

The Browns also activated starting linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. from injured reserve. He will return Sunday against the Chargers after missing three games with a hamstring injury.

Walker came back to practice earlier this week. While he was out, the defense posted back-to-back impressive performances in wins over Chicago and Minnesota, holding the Bears and Vikings to a combined 20 points.

Cleveland’s defense is ranked second overall in the NFL going into Sunday’s game against Los Angeles.

Chiefs LB Willie Gay says mental health is a struggle

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs second-year linebacker Willie Gay Jr. has posted on social media that he is struggling with his mental health. Gay offered no specifics in the tweet, which was posted soon after Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Gay was excused from practice for “personal reasons.”

Gay, 23, returned to practice just this week after coming off injured reserve. Gay hurt his toe and landed on the IR list in early September, and the Chiefs now have a 21-day window to activate him.
