U.S. Box Office Forecast For Avatar: The Way Of Water Is $150M-$175M+! – San Diego Gay & Lesbian News
The wait is over for Avatar loyal fans as its sequel is all ready to be released in theaters, but this is not the news behind its reason to be in the headlines. It is due to its opening of at least $150 million. Yes, you read it right. And this is not it. Tracking has it higher around $ 175 million, while the rivals stated the number to be around $200 million.
The opening of the sequel of James Cameron’s avatar is 95% ahead of the original 2009 title’s $77 million. However, the thing is that the movie has to compete against holiday fanboy titles, and the visible numbers should not be believed blindly.
The success of Avatar was incredible
Unaided awareness, (the indicator that measures those polls mentioning their want-to-see of the title without being reminded of the title) forecasts it in the high 30s and 40s across all Latino, Hispanic and Black demos. These figures are among the most powerful, and any studio would die for them. The success of Avatar was incredible. On its first release in the theaters, no one knew what to expect.
It was not the normal alien movie displaying them as villains rather it showed aliens as the protagonist. The movie was released on December 10, 2009, in London and on December 18 in the USA. It received highly positive reviews, and even the critics passed its groundbreaking visual effects. It broke several box office records and surpassed Cameron’s Titanic by becoming the highest-grossing movie at the time in both the USA and Canada.
Titanic held all those records for twelve years, but Avatar became the highest-grossing movie of all time by legging out big time to a $2.9 billion global cume. Stateside, the film was fourth highest of all time at the box office after its re-releases and settling at $785.2 million.
The alien film remained the highest-grossing film in the world for nearly a decade but was overtaken by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. However, a China re-release of Avatar led to the film reaching again on the top worldwide in March 2021.
If we look into the inflation, then it is the second-highest-grossing movie of all time after Gone with the Wind with a total of more than $3 billion. It also won the title of the best-selling video of 2010 in the United States and became the first film to gross more than $2 billion.

Avatar: The Way of Water was to be released in China
The success of the first film resulted in Cameron signing up with 20th Century Fox to produce four sequels from which Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar 3 have completed filming and are scheduled to premiere on December 16, 2022, and December 22, 2024, respectively. The other two sequels are to be released on December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
The Public Republic of China has sidelined many Hollywood blockbusters as theaters have returned during the pandemic. But the good news is that it was announced that Avatar: The Way of Water was to be released in China. The original movie made over $260 million in China because of 3D and Imax.
The trailer for the movie was released on November 2, 2022, building excitement among the audience. The movie is 3 hours and 12 minutes long, but many are not concerned with the runtime as it will not impact Avatar 2’s audience number given the amount of free time people will have at the end of the year, and there are no other tentpoles to compete against the Avatar. Advance tickets for Avatar: The Way of Water have been on sale since Monday.
