Twin City Players opens season with ‘Fun Home’ – South Bend Tribune

Kimmie Staggs rehearses for the Twin City Players' production of "Fun Home" that it will present Sept. 10-26, 2021, at the theater in St. Joseph.

ST. JOSEPH — Twin City Players opens its season with “Fun Home” from Friday through Sept. 26 at 600 W. Glenlord Road.

With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, the musical’s based on the 2006 graphic novel by Alison Bechdel about her relationship to her closeted gay father, who committed suicide shortly after Bechdel herself came out as a lesbian to her parents.

In the musical, Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires.

This show features language, sexuality, death and LGBTQ+ themes and is recommended for ages 13 and older.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Tickets are $15.
