STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The inimitable James “Jim” Smith, a friend and mentor to those who were lucky enough to cross his path — the perceptive pageant guru who was an advocate for veteran’s rights and gay pride — was feted at a luncheon by more than 200 family members and friends at LiGreci’s Staaten.

There, from the legendary banquet spot in West Brighton, just a mile or so from where Smith was raised, guests attested to the community leader’s genuine nature, personal character, perseverance and long lasting courage.
