Student organizations every UMKC student should know | UMKC Roo News – University News

Whether you’re a new or current student at UMKC, it may be shocking to learn that UMKC has 300 student organizations.

The variety of student organizations ranges from multicultural groups to recreational with plenty in between. A full list of UMKC’s is available here

Here is a small sampler of student organizations students should consider joining:

Multicultural

African Students’ Association (ASA)

ASA brings together African and non-African students in the community to promote cultural awareness of African culture and create a diverse network for UMKC students from different parts of the world.

Asian Students in America (ASIA)

ASIA creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for Asian-identifying students and works to increase the visibility and involvement of Asian-identifying students.

Latinx Student Union (LSU)

LSU provides social, cultural and academic support for Latinx students and the general student body. 

Muslim Students’ Association (MSA)

MSA meets the needs of Muslim students on campus through group events and activities. MSA also provides resources to encourage collaboration and understanding between the Muslim and non-Muslim campus community.

Pride Alliance

The Pride Alliance provides a positive and caring environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, pansexual, asexual and ally communities within UMKC. They also provide educational programs for LGBTQIA topics and advocate fairness and respect for students, faculty and staff.

Recreational

K-ROO Student Radio

The K-ROO Student Radio enriches the UMKC and Kansas City communities by providing information and entertainment through quality online radio programming, live events and other forms of community outreach.

UMKC Robotics

UMKC Robotics provides students with an educational playground through the creation of robots and IOT (Internet of Things) devices.

Student Environmental Coalition (SEC)

SEC is an all-inclusive group open to UMKC students who are interested in conservation, sustainability and environmental justice. Activities include environmental clean-ups, nature/earth science field trips and social events.

Political

Student Governing Association (SGA)

SGA is the governing student organization for UMKC, shaping policy that affects the student body and overseeing the other organizations.

Students for Justice

Students for Justice seeks to raise awareness for the freedoms and rights of human beings across the globe. 

Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM)

ASUM is a student organization with chapters across the UM system that aims to make students a part of the legislative process at the state level.

Special Interests

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

NAMI aims to build better lives for those affected by mental illness both within the UMKC community and outside of it. They also work to raise awareness and build a community of hope for those in need.

Roos Against Violence Everywhere (RAVE)

RAVE works together with the R.I.S.E. (Resources, Intervention, Support and Education) office at UMKC to strengthen the community’s response to gender-based and sexual violence. This group provides victim support services, advocacy, training, education and outreach to the campus and community.

Higher Education Student Association (HESA)

HESA serves the needs of graduate students enrolled or interested in Higher Education Administration at UMKC. This includes providing opportunities for professional and personal development, networking with other higher education student associations and assisting in professional advancement.

Animal Rescue Society (ARS)

ARS helps various animal shelters in the Kansas City area and improves overall animal welfare.

Student Veterans Organization (SVO)

SVO provides resources, support and opportunities to student veterans and their families. They also participate in several community and university service projects throughout the school year.

Checking out student organizations is an excellent way for students to get involved on campus, be challenged in their understanding of other fields and cultures, and develop a close-knit community of peers.
