SONG JOINS ‘FRONTLINE OF MEDICINE’ AT VIRGINIA GAY HOSPITAL – vintontoday.com

Virginia Gay Hospital (VGH) in Vinton is excited to welcome Dr. Kyle Song as a family practitioner. Previously, Song practiced medicine for five years in Virginia. He is currently accepting patients.

Song, originally from New York, first enrolled in the animal science program at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. He joined the military as a medic to assist with the cost of out-of-state tuition and was deployed in Afghanistan from March 2004 – July 2005. There, he realized his passion for helping others, specifically in family medicine.

“Family medicine is the frontline of medicine. We’re the first person patients see when they have concerns, and it’s important to give patients confidence in our care,” Song said, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach. “One of the things we’re always told is to give the patient time to talk and listen to them instead of just sending them on their way. There’s a whole lot more to people than just one thing.”

After graduating from Virginia Tech, Song attended Virginia Commonwealth University for his M.A. and received his D.O. from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at Shenandoah Valley Family Residency in Winchester, Virginia. Song is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Osteopathic Association.

Song’s prior medical experience took place in a metropolitan environment, but he is excited to return to rural healthcare, which is what he calls the root of medicine.

“In the metropolitan areas, it’s harder to do a full spectrum of medicine because there are so many specialists,” said Song. “In being referred to so many different providers, you lose the continuity of care and the relationship between patient and doctor.”

Song and his wife, Sylvia, have been married for 12 years with two daughters: Emma, 7, and Charlie, 2. They are currently expecting a son in July. Song is looking forward to exploring the Iowa outdoors and local golf courses in addition to learning about the local community.

Virginia Gay Hospital is a privately operated, nonprofit rural hospital created by the trust of Virginia Gay, which has successfully served the needs of the people of Vinton and the surrounding communities since 1923. For more information, visit myvgh.org.
