Sheryl Lee Ralph wins Critics Choice Award | Entertainment – Jamaica Gleaner

Sheryl Lee Ralph won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary at the 28th annual Critics Choice Award, held at The Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Styled by daughter, creative consultant and designer Ivy-Victoria Maurice, in custom Jovana Louis, Ralph took the win over Paulina Alexis for Reservation Dogs; Ayo Edebiri, The Bear; Marcia Gay Harden, Uncoupled; Janelle James, Abbott Elementary and Annie Potts, Young Sheldon.

A breakout hit, Abbott Elementary, which scored five nominations, including the two nods for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Ralph and James, also took home the prize for Best Comedy Series.

Other nominations included Best Actress in a Comedy Series for the show’s creator Quinta Brunson who last week won her first Golden Globe for Best Television Actress in a Musical/Comedy Series, and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Tyler James Williams, who also won his first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in Television Series. The Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series went to Hacks‘ Jean Smart, while the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series went to Barry‘s Henry Winkler.

NAACP IMAGE AWARDS NOD

An American mockumentary with just two seasons under its belt, Abbott Elementary has been met with much critical acclaim.

It has been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for the 54th NAACP Image Awards. Ralph also scored a nod for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The event will be held on Saturday, February 25.

The show’s first season was also nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards at the 2022 ceremony, and won three. Wendy O’Brien took home the award for Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series; Ralph, Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series and Quinta Brunson, Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series.

Abbott Elementary closed out last Tuesday’s Golden Globe Awards with three of five awards, including Best Musical/Comedy Series. Ralph and James, who were nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series for Abbott Elementary, missed out on the top prize. Ozark’s Julia Garner took the win.

AFI HONOUR

On Friday Abbott Elementary was one of 10 television series honoured by the American Film Institute Awards (AFI).

Other television shows honoured were The Bear, Better Call Saul, Hacks, Mo, Pachinko, Reservation Dogs, Severance, Somebody Somewhere and The White Lotus.

The AFI also recognised 10 films, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, Nope, She Said, Tar, Top Gun: Maverick, The Woman King and Women Talking.
