Angie said as the public discourse surrounding sex evolves, and the technology updates, so does our engagement with arguably one of the most primal and basic human needs.

This means a lot of things are set to change in 2023 – at least when it comes to stuff that happens in the bedroom.

She offered some thoughts on the sex trends set to take off this year, and what we can do to boost our sex lives.

If you’re looking for different ways to get saucy, here are some tips from the expert.

Seeking out the “Solo Frontier”

Angie said: “Now that masturbation and sex toys are openly discussed in mainstream media, we expect 2023 to continue encouraging adults to go forth and conquer the solo frontier.

“When we first started Sssh.com, women in particular wanted to learn how to pleasure their partners, but that has changed.

“Now, they want to learn how to pleasure themselves first.

“And if anyone thinks being ‘selfish’ in this regard is bad, consider that people who know their own bodies and what excites them are generally more confident and generous lovers when with a partner.

“Moreover, it’s obvious that being able to communicate your needs clearly to your partner goes a long way towards a happy, healthy sex life.”

Demand for adult sex education

With more people seeking out solo exploration, it follows there’s an accompanying 2023 trend for more adult sex-ed.

The cult of “self-improvement” spilled over into our sex lives.

Especially with the emergence of the sexual wellness sector, consumers are seeking products, apps, and information which shows them how to have “better” sex.

While it is exciting to see pleasure and education joining forces to combat generations of sexual shaming and stigma, it’s still important to remember that “better sex” is ultimately driven by open and honest communication and enthusiastic consent from partners.

Angie said: “By all means seek out the wisdom of accredited professionals, attend pleasure workshops if you wish, and purchase plenty of lube, but don’t get so caught up in ‘looking for the G-spot’ or trying to ‘master reverse cowgirl’ that you put undue pressure or expectations on yourself or your partner.

“Often, the best knowledge ends up coming from experience so in 2023, we say focus on being truly present in the moment with your partner, and leave the noise, marketing, and judgment behind.”

More emphasis on intimacy

The pandemic definitely put a damper on the de-rigueur hook-up culture that grew from the 2010s.

Those without a steady partner (or those in unsatisfactory partnerships) were faced with loneliness on multiple levels during lockdowns, and perhaps for the first time in anyone’s adult lives, there was no denying or escaping their own emotional reality.

In other words, the pandemic basically forced many of us to reconsider the nature of our relationships and what it is that we really want long-term.

Not surprisingly, people going into 2023 are more conscious about who they invest their time with, and we expect this sensibility to continue to grow.

Even if casual sex itself may never go out of style, there’s definitely a push for “quality” over quantity of partners, as formerly affection-starved people are now looking for more pleasure and intimacy in their sex lives.

Greater inclusiveness

We are arriving at a point in our culture where retailers – and even Hollywood – are acknowledging that people still have sex past age 40, and all consenting adult bodies are worthy of pleasure.

For instance, instead of shrugging off painful sex as a reality of menopause, both the medical and pleasure product communities are stepping up their game, so even if there are hot flashes, there are also toys, CBD lube, and plenty of options to ensure “sexy doesn’t stop.”

Angie added: “Additionally, we love seeing more toys designed to address mobility issues, which means the options for partners with differently abled bodies or chronic health conditions are on the rise.

“Instead of sending the message that sex needs to look a certain ‘cookie cutter’ way or have certain physical parameters for satisfaction, in 2023 we expect to see the trend towards inclusivity keep on going as people are keen to find their bliss in a way that looks and feels right for their body.”

Exploration

Angie said: “While we don’t expect the free-loving 60s to make a comeback, as we move deeper into this ‘roaring’ 20s decade we do anticipate a renewed joie de vivre when it comes to sexual experimentation.

“If you are fed up with rigid labels and want to experience pleasure without pretence, know that you are probably in very good company.

“Current porn industry trends towards greater inclusion (i.e. bisexual fantasies, pegging, fetishes, etc.) definitely seem to reflect the emerging desire for ‘permission’ to seek out wider sexual horizons on one’s own terms.”

Porn and pleasure

Artificial Intelligence has simmered away quietly for sometime now in the sex tech world, but now there’s no hiding its vast applications or the deeper ramifications of its increased prevalence.

AI technology is now being deployed by adult platforms to tag videos and create algorithms that show you content based on previous preferences – it’s next gen content marketing.

But as for content, you can also find porn that is completely AI derived–made with no real actors.

Additionally, AI is being used by the pleasure product sector to create toys that more closely replicate human sexual techniques.

Angie said: “While we might be a long way off from sex robots being the norm, don’t be surprised to see toys that learn from your bio-feedback in the near future.

“Obviously there are many ethical and privacy questions that arise from the use of AI, so we also expect the debate in this hot area to keep on growing alongside the tech itself.”
