See NICU babies dressed up in Halloween costumes at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital – MLive.com
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The tiniest of humans are getting into the Halloween spirit by donning cute costumes while in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
This week, marks the third year Gay Sexton, child life assistant at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, and the Child and Family Life team have created costumes for the babies.
“We made over 200 costumes this year,” said Sexton in an Oct. 27 news release. She said she has a notebook where parents can choose costumes each year.
Halloween is on Monday, Oct. 31. Some of the costumes this year include a strawberry, bumblebee, Batman, Superman, turtle, and a cheeseburger and fries combo.
South Haven natives Lauren Oviedo and her husband stay in the Grand Rapids area while their three-week-old baby, Haelynn, spends more time growing in the NICU, the news release said.
“She got to wear her very first outfit yesterday and a costume today,” Oviedo said in a statement about the bumblebee outfit. “She’s thriving at the moment, which is great. And we have no health concerns, which makes it very easy to be here and makes us very grateful.”
The Child and Family Life team dressed up Logan Torrey as Batman, who already had a black- and white-striped onesie that went perfectly with his costume, the release said.
By the end of the heartwarming costume event, officials say there were plenty of smiles.
“These activities and costumes bring excitement and activity to the NICU,” said Registered Nurse Kelly Jager in a statement. “It makes things seem a little more normal for families who might be going through a difficult time.”
