Second case of monkeypox confirmed in South Dakota, according to Department of Health – Argus Leader

The second case of monkeypox has been confirmed in South Dakota, according to the Department of Health.

The case was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s monkeypox tracker, according to data released on Thursday.

DOH was unavailable to offer more details on the second case as of Monday afternoon.

The confirmed disease comes over a month after the first reported case of a man in his 30s from eastern South Dakota.

The disease often results in painful and itchy blisters that form a rash on a person’s genitals, hands, feet, chest, face or mouth, according to the CDC. It spreads through close, personal contact such as skin-to-skin contact including sex.

While anyone can get monkeypox, cases have disproportionately occurred in men who have sex with other men, according to previous reporting.

What symptoms should you look for, according to the DOH?

  • Rash that looks like pimples or blisters that can occur in the mouth, genital and anal areas or other parts of the face and body like the hands, feet and chest.
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle and backaches
  • Chills
  • Exhaustion
  • Swollen Lymph Nodes

Are there monkeypox vaccines in SD?

Yes, but people are encouraged to call ahead to make an appointment.

Vaccine-eligible people include gay and bisexual men, as well as transgender and non-binary people who have sex with men, according to the DOH. People who’ve also had skin-to-skin contact with someone in a social network experiencing monkeypox are also encouraged to get vaccinated.
