Scratch-made San Antonio pizza reigns supreme in national list – Laredo Morning Times

Pizza rankings can be controversial. There’s deep-dish. There’s Detroit-style. Thin crust has its fans. Hand-tossed pies can’t be beat. New York-style for when you’re on the go and just need a quick bite. Then there’s Neapolitan-style for the pizza purists.

Whatever strikes your fancy, Food & Wine’s latest list shares pies from across the land with nods to the best ‘zas in every state. Via 313’s chewy dough and crunchy crust earned top honors for the Lone Star State, and San Antonians will be happy to know the Austin favorite will add a location in the Alamo City later this year.

The Detroit-style pie wasn’t the only one to get some love from the food mag. Cane Rosso in Dallas and off-shoot Zoli’s were noted for their Napoletana servings and New York-style slices, respectively. Napoletano pies were the focus of the remainder of the list with Coltivare in Houston and Para Llevar in media-darling Marfa getting nods.

San Antonians won’t have to travel far to get a taste of a noteworthy slice. The publication tapped Michel Sohocki’s Il Forno to round out their list. Helmed by chef Jason Garcia, Il Forno’s been firing up Napoletano bites from its corner of South Flores and Cevallos since 2016.

Honored to have been mentioned amongst the great spots on this list!

The mag noted the restaurant’s use of their backyard garden in their pies, but Garcia also works with small producers to secure the flavors of South Texas in every bite. Scratch-made mozzarella is the norm at Il Forno, and true to Sohocki’s restaurant mantra, house-cured meats hang from a cooler inside the restaurant.

Visit Il Forno at 122 Nogalitos St., Tuesday through Saturday.
