Rio women blanked by Golden Bears – Rio Grande

Rio Grande Sports Information
RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Nearly every statistic pointed to the University of Rio Grande women’s soccer team dominating West Virginia University-Tech.
Except the numbers that counted most, though – the final score.
The visiting Golden Bears made the most of their limited scoring opportunities and posted their first win of the season, stunning the RedStorm, 2-0, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference action at Evan E. Davis Field.
WVU-Tech improved to 1-12-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play with the victory.
Rio Grande, which had won or tied five of its previous six outings, slipped to 3-8-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the RSC.
The RedStorm finished with a whopping 30-5 advantage in overall shots and a 14-3 edge in shots on goal.
Rio also had six of the game’s eight corner kick chances – all in the second half – but failed to cash in.
The Golden Bears snapped a scoreless tie with 13:26 left before halftime when Angelica Taylor played the deflection of her own shot by Rio freshman keeper Aina Lopez (Barcelona, Spain) and fired her follow up attempt into the back of an open goal.
Tech’s final marker came just 2-1/2 minutes into the second stanza when Ana Gay Mesa lofted a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box over the head of Lopez and into the back of the net.
Rio Grande had 21 of its 30 shots – included 12 on goal – after halftime, but couldn’t score.
The RedStorm also lost the services of senior Trinity Hassey (Westerville, Ohio) to an injury with just 2:17 remaining in the contest.
Lopez had the one save in a losing cause for Rio.
Sandra Garcia stopped 14 shots in goal for WVU-Tech.
The RedStorm is scheduled to return to action on Thursday in Pittsburgh, Pa. against Carlow University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
