Republican Congressman Attends Gay Son’s Wedding Three Days After Voting Against Same-Sex Marriage – PopCrush

Try to read this sentence without having a stroke: a Republican congressman voted against same-sex marriage rights and then attended his gay son’s wedding three days later.

Huh?

Glenn Thompson, a former firefighter from Pennsylvania, is a conservative U.S. representative in Congress.

According to a spokeswoman, “Congressman and Mrs Thompson were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life.”

Yet, just three days earlier, Thompson joined 156 Republican colleagues in opposing a bill that would provide federal protection for gay marriage.

Despite this, his son told NBC News that he “married the love of [his] life” and the spokeswoman said the family was “very happy” to welcome their new son-in-law.

Strange moves like these are coming after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, echoing fears that same-sex marriage rights and LGBTQ+ rights would be in danger.

Thompson has also voted against a similar bills that protect the right for married couples to obtain contraception and abortion access rights.

Many on the internet called out Thompson’s hypocrisy after it was reported by The Times.

“Here’s your wedding present, Son. Some hatred from dear old dad,” one person quipped.

Another said, “The father-of-the-groom speech must’ve been awkward af.”

One person on Twitter simply replied with “……..”

“‘I just don’t think you should have basic human rights, son. Let’s agree to disagree,'” another user imagined the wedding speech.

According to Buzzfeed News, Thompson actually said in his wedding speech, “We love it when they find their one true love, especially when they become a part of our families then. That’s what we’re rooting for.”

Except, again, he voted against a bill that would codify federal protection for marriage equality just before making this speech.

Allegedly, the anonymous wedding guest who shared footage of the speech said, “These politicians need to be exposed for who they really are.”

Make it make sense.
