Megan Rapinoe outs her sister
Megan publicly came out in July 2012, but she knew that she was a lesbian from her first year of college. Since then, she has worked tremendously towards garnering support for the LGBTQ community. She got engaged to American basketball player, Suzanne Bird, who is also called as Sue Bird.
Rachael recalled an incident where Megan was coming out to their parents. Megan used Rachael’s big secret as an excuse to save herself from the scrutiny of her parents. Describing the incident, Rachael said, “I was at class, and our mom and Megan got to talking. Megan came out to her. She didn’t take it very well, she was very upset.”

As their mother was upset, Megan reacted to the situation spontaneously. “Well Rachael’s gay too!”, said Megan, which Racheal described as Megan’s defense mechanism to cope with the stressful situation while opening up about her sexuality. The soccer star met basketball player, Sue Bird, for the first time during the 2016 Summer Olympics. They met a couple of times after that. in 2017, they publicly announced their relationship. Since then they have been in the limelight. They were the first same-sex couple to be featured on the cover of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. Even though the magazine cover raised a lot of eyebrows, Megan believes that representation as well as visibility is very necessary.
Megan and Sue have supported each other publicly for their endeavors as well as during controversies. Megan called herself Sue Bird’s number one super fan in 2019. They both are often seen cheering for each other from the stands. The couple announced their engagement in October 2020.
