Q&A with Niagara’s Luke Hutchie on his new horror comedy ‘Ezra’ – St. Catharines Standard

When it comes to new vampire shows, AMC’s “Interview With the Vampire” isn’t the only game in town.

This month, former Niagara Falls resident Luke Hutchie debuted “Ezra” on OutTV. The short-form comedy/horror series stars Hutchie as a gay vampire turning his back on a repressed life in the shadows to join the human world.

The former A.N. Myer student has corralled a cast which includes Chelsea Clark from “Ginny & Georgia” and Veronika Slowikowska from “What We Do in the Shadwows.”

After filming over the winter, the cheeky series premiered Oct. 1 with the first two episodes of a 10-episode first season. Hutchie lured “Canada’s Drag Race” winner Priyanka to star as herself in the final episode.

With the show finally out of the gates, Hutchie checked in with The Review for some Q&A:

Review: After all those years putting it together, what was your reaction when the first episode was finally released?

Hutchie: “It was amazing! To finally see the story we’ve been working so hard to tell out in the world was surreal. I’m still processing the fact it’s no longer this little thing made on Zoom calls and laptops! It’s so wild and I’m so happy it’s out!”

Review: Were you a horror fan growing up or did the vampire genre just work for what you were trying to do?

Hutchie: “I love horror! I love everything scary! My favorite movies are ‘Jennifer’s Body’ and ‘Scream’ If I wasn’t at the reins of this show, I would’ve died to be in it. ‘Ezra’ is such a perfect place for me to live in because I love the blood and camp of the show!”

Review: Your show premiered one day before that other big vampire show, ‘Interview With the Vampire,’ on AMC. Worried about too many bats in the kitchen?

Hutchie: “I think that show is an extension of the 90’s film and is extremely different from ‘Ezra.’ I don’t think ‘Ezra’ is a ‘vampire’ show per se, I think it’s a dark comedy that has vampires, if that makes sense? I also think Ezra does a great job at placing diversity at its forefront, which is something not often done in the supernatural genre.”

Review: Any surprising feedback from ‘Ezra’ so far?

Hutchie: “I’m just shocked that people are loving it too much! To see the support online, and the comments – having them all be positive, has been so amazing! It’s definitely a pinch me moment. It’s been such a ride and I love that people love our little show!”

Review: Any word of a Season 2 and if so, where would you like the story to go?

Hutchie: “Who knows? Maybe there’s been word for season two, maybe there hasn’t. I definitely don’t think this story is over, in fact, I think it’s just begun. Ezra has a whole family wanting to get to him, so I think he has a few challenges ahead of him.”
