LAS CRUCES – Southern New Mexico Pride’s annual week-long pride celebration kicks off Saturday with Drag Queen Alfresco and a ball.
Take a look at the schedule for Pride Week this year, and a few separate events planned for the weekend.
Southern NM Pride Ball
Pride Week starts off this year with the Southern NM Pride Ball, presented by La Vida Project of Family & Youth Innovations Plus. The event will be held at The Range LC, located at 3217 El Camino Real Rd. from 7-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.
The evening is a nod to ball culture, originated by Black and Latino drag queens in New York City, and will feature drag performances, prizes and other entertainment.
Drag Queen Alfresco
Pride Week’s kick-off event is the monthly Drag Queen Alfresco held at Salud! de Mesilla, 1800 Avenida de Mesilla, Saturday, Sept. 24. Seating is at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. There is a $10 cover charge.
Local drag queen Ivonna Bump will host and perform while multiple other drag queens will take turns on stage lip-syncing to their favorite hits.
Shaving Cream Baseball and Family Picnic
PFLAG Las Cruces, SNMP, GLSEN and New Mexico State University LGBTQ+ Programs are hosting food and games on campus Sunday, Sept. 25. From noon to 2 p.m., Preciado Park, located on Gregg Street on campus, will be filled with people of all ages enjoying fun games and food.
Pride GAYme Night
RAD Retrocade will host a Pride GAYme Night Monday night, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. Food, drinks and various games will be offered at the bar, located at 201 N. Main St.
Pride Drag Loteria
Loteria fans can join Ivonna Bump in Mesilla Tuesday evening at Vintage Wines, located at 2461 Calle de Principal. All ages are welcome. Seating starts at 6 p.m. and the game starts at 7 p.m. $5 is required to play with prizes.
Pride Rainbow Drinks
SNMP’s monthly Rainbow Drinks event will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Salud! de Mesilla. Join friends and meet new people at the popular mixer.
Pride Karaoke
Head over to Little Toad Creek Brewery & Distillery Thursday evening for Pride Karaoke. Prep your favorite song and grab the bar’s microphone at 7 p.m., located at 119 N. Main St.
Pride Movie Night – “Paris is Burning”
Take in the 1980s documentary “Paris is Burning” Friday, Sept. 30 at Alma d’Arte Charter High School, 402 W. Court Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. PFLAG Las Cruces and the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library will provide popcorn and drinks to attendees. This event is free to attendees.
The film documents New York City’s ball culture and the Black, Latino, gay and transgender communities involved with organizing.
2022 Pride on the Plaza
A Pride March around the Plaza de Las Cruces, 100 N. Main St., will start the festivities at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. The march will end at the plaza where more entertainment and activities will be held until 10 p.m. Tables with products and information about local LGBTQ+ groups will also be set up in the area.
Pride Brunch
People can enjoy brunch at noon Salud! de Mesilla Sunday, Oct. 2 to finish out Pride Week.
Pride Happy Hour
The final event of Pride Week is Pride Happy Hour held at 3 p.m. at Vintage Wines in Mesilla Sunday. Join others to talk about the exciting week of events and start looking toward next year’s Pride Week.
