As the nation grows more diverse, the need for support has never been greater for LBGTQ+ people.
PFLAG, the Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, is the nation’s oldest and largest advocacy, education and support group.
PFLAG Akron, which is the nearest chapter, is the oldest in Ohio, having organized in 1981, and is part of a national network of more than 400 PFLAG chapters.

Such support is crucial. According to the U.S. Center for Diseases Control & Prevention, LGBTQ+ youth consider suicide at nearly three times the rate of heterosexual youth and are five times more likely to attempt suicide.
Suicide attempts by LGBTQ+ and questioning young adults are four to six times more likely to require medical treatment compared to heterosexual youth.
In a national study, 40% of transgender adults attempted suicide, with 92% doing so by the time they turned 25.
Also, LGBTQ+ youth rejected by their families are nearly nine times more likely to have attempted suicide compared to peers who have their family’s support.
Akron PFLAG meets at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month at First Congregational Church at 292 E Market Street.
