Our 20 Favorite LGBTQ+ TV Shows of 2022 – Them
The second season of Girls 5eva may not have Busy Philipps citing queer theory she learned while listening to audiobooks on Peloton, but it isn’t any less delightfully gay from top to bottom. The series has continued to be all about the four women at its core, as well as their rocky journey back toward pop stardom, and that certainly includes more queer shenanigans with Paula Pell’s Gloria — and it is, in my book, always a pleasure to see Pell on screen with her real-life wife Janine Brito. Beyond its queerness, what makes Girls5Eva so damn wonderful is its commitment to actually being a comedy on every level. It’s the kind of sitcom we haven’t had since 30 Rock — one that exists in a world as sincere and real as it is absurd and stupid. — Juan Barquin
Los Espookys (HBO)
Even before it aired, the latest season of Los Espookys felt like a gift to the weird art gays. The first season of the deeply silly and singular Spanish-language comedy, which follows a group of friends who professionally fake paranormal phenomena, was so deliciously absurd and overtly queer that I was sure someone at HBO would realize what niche masterpiece they funded and take it away. That has since seemingly happened, unfortunately; it was announced this past weekend that the series — co-created by and starring Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen — wouldn’t be seeing a third season. But not before the trio brought us an even more delightfully bizarre season two, featuring not just core favorites but also Kim Petras as a hilariously ditzy American ambassador, River L. Ramirez as an over-the-top drama queen sis, Yalitza Aparicio as the literal moon, and Martine Gutierrez as a spooky pageant queen brought back from the dead. Although it seems that views this season weren’t enough to keep Los Espookys running, the instant cult classic will surely be enjoyed by artsy queer outcasts for years to come. — Sarah Burke
