LAKE LINDEN — A downstate man was taken to the hospital after a single-vehicle crash in Schoolcraft Township Thursday night in which his car caught fire.

The crash occurred about 8:05 p.m. on Gay Road in Schoolcraft Township, about 750 feet west of Winterhaven Road.

A 28-year-old man from downstate Belleville was driving eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle and veered off the roadway to the right, according to the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle re-entered the roadway before crossing the westbound lane and running off the roadway to the left. There, the car collided with multiple trees and came to a stop, catching on fire.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff’s office said. The incident remains under investigation.

The man was transported to Keweenaw Aspirus Hospital. His condition was unknown Friday morning.
