SuperTed, the British cartoon series about a teddy bear with magical powers, has entertained millions of people since it was first screened in 1982. Now a survey of LGBTQ characters in cartoons has identified it as the first to include a gay character.
The cult series, which has been shown in more than 120 countries, including the United States, France, UAE and Australia, and been translated into 32 languages, features a discarded teddy bear that is rescued by a Spotty Man and taken to a magic cloud to receive special powers. He faces a villain named Texas Pete, a strongman named Bulk and a Skeleton who seems far more in touch with his emotions than either of them.
