Niecy Nash Wants the Golden Globes to Know ‘I’m Gay Now’
Niecy Nash-Betts is proud to be herself at tonight’s Golden Globes.
Nash-Betts, who is nominated for her role in Monster: Dahmer – The Jeffrey Dahmer Story tonight, also presented the trophy for Best Actress, Musical/Comedy Series. She took advantage of her stage time to send a proud and loud message about her sexuality.
As Nash-Betts approached to present the award, she took in her applause, and thanked the audience.
“I don’t know if you’re clapping because you like the dress, because I’m here, or because I’m gay now, but I’ll take it!” she said.
Now, Nash-Betts was wearing a gorgeous bejeweled purple Dolce dress, but we love her no matter what she’s wearing!
Previously, Nash-Betts had declined to label her sexuality or call her marriage a “coming out.”
After she got married to musician Jessica Betts, she went on The Ellen Degeneres Show and told Ellen that she didn’t want to label her sexuality, she was just in love and married who she was in love with, who happened to be a woman this time.
Even as recently as last October, Nash-Betts had talked about not wanting to label her sexuality. On The Tamron Hall Show, she called herself “Jess-Sexual,” and said that the term came from a conversation with her daughter.
She said that her daughter Dia had asked how she identified and showed her a video about different LGBTQ+ labels and identities.
“I was like, ‘Girl, I’m more confused now than I was before this. I don’t know. If I have to coin it in the moment, I would say I’m Jess-sexual,’” she said.
