Neil Gaiman says The Sandman critics ‘don’t like gay people’ – Metro.co.uk
The Sandman author Neil Gaiman has given his view on critics of the series, saying they ‘don’t like gay people, they don’t like Black people, and they don’t like women.’
The writer, who was also instrumental in bringing his beloved story to the small screen, pointed out the ‘silliness’ of those who claim the series is too ‘woke’.
‘Occasionally, you get people shouting at us for having made up all of these gay characters who weren’t in the comics, and then we’d go “Have you read the comics?” And they’d go “No.” And we’d go, “They were gay in the comics.’” And they’d go “You’re just woke and nobody is going to watch your horrible show,”‘ Neil explained.
‘And then we went number one in the world for four weeks. And they went, “It’s all bots! We hate you. You’re woke.”‘
He added to Inverse: ‘It’s a weird silliness. These complainers don’t like gay people, they don’t like Black people, and they don’t like women. And if you look at their profiles, they don’t like vaccines, they don’t like Democrats, and they’re not big on voting.’
Despite those who take issue with the fantasy series, which stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, it’s been wildly popular and was recently renewed for a second season.
In a tweet, Neil wrote: ‘The rumours are true. Netflix is thrilled that so many of you have been watching Sandman, and the thing we were all hoping would happen… has indeed happened…’
Speaking further about what the future holds for The Sandman, Neil teased exciting narratives ahead for Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams (Tom), Lucifer, the ruler of Hell (Gwendoline Christie) and plenty more characters – some of whom we’ve already met, and others who we will come across for the first time.
‘Millions upon millions of people have welcomed and watched and loved The Sandman on Netflix, from established Sandman fans to people who were simply curious, and then became obsessed with the Lord of Dreams, his family and their goings-on,’ Neil said.
‘It gives me unbelievable pleasure to say that, working with Netflix and Warner Bros., Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and I will be bringing even more of The Sandman stories to life.’
Previously chatting to Metro.co.uk, Neil also promised an appearance from some fan favourite characters from the comics, including beloved trans character Wanda.
‘Absolutely, and we made sure that we had, for the season two writers room, that we had trans and we had NB [non-binary] people in the writers room working on it because that seemed to us to be the only way to do it,’ he told us.
‘So The Sandman, we’ll get Wanda, we’ll get all of that stuff – as long as enough people watch season one and they let us keep going.’
The Sandman is available to stream on Netflix.
