Monkeypox Outbreak in Gay, Bisexual Men Prompts Effort to Avert Stigma – The Wall Street Journal

The sudden spread of monkeypox among gay and bisexual men echoes the emergence of HIV/AIDS in the 1980s. This time public-health officials in the U.S. and around the world are aiming for a better outcome.

Monkeypox, a viral illness that until recently was rarely seen outside Africa, has since early May been detected in more than 4,000 people in roughly five dozen countries where the disease doesn’t normally occur, according to the nonprofit data platform Global.health. Gay and bisexual men account for most cases, according to public-health authorities, and none have died.
