Man jailed for anti-gay stabbing attack outside Brooklyn bodega – New York Post
A Brooklyn man was sentenced to up to five years in prison for stabbing a woman in the shoulder and calling her a “t—-y” in a sick anti-gay attack outside a bodega, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Samuel Huff, 32, hurled the homophobic slur at the 33-year-old victim just moments before he lunged at her in East New York back in May 2020, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted assault as a hate crime.
Huff first ran into the victim and her friend inside the Placencia Deli at 1129 Blake Avenue just after 9 p.m. before following them across the street to a liquor store, the DA said.
“What are you doing here? You’re not supposed to be here? You are a t—-y,” Huff said to the woman after approaching her in the store, while also calling her another expletive.
The victim ignored Huff but he continued to make homophobic and threatening remarks, according to the DA.
The woman then left the store and got into a BMW convertible, which had its top down, which is when Huff started shouting, “You’re a t—-y. You’re a (explicative). Get the (explicative) out of here,” prosecutors said.
He then lunged over, stabbed her in the shoulder with a sharp object and fled, the DA said.
The victim had to get seven stitches for her wound when she was treated in hospital.
Huff was nabbed five days later after being identified in the bodega’s surveillance footage.
“Hate has no place in Brooklyn’s diverse communities, and this shocking and unprovoked act of homophobic violence underscores the importance of vigorous hate crime prosecutions to deter anyone who may consider acting on their bigoted views,” District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said.
“Our dedicated Hate Crimes Bureau relentlessly pursues cases against those who victimize our neighbors because of their perceived race, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity or religion and we are deeply committed to preventing these despicable offenses in Brooklyn.”
