Mack Lee Gay, Jr., 90, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022. Born in Rocky Mount, NC, in 1932, he was the son of the late Mack Lee Gay, Sr. and the late Grace Ward Gay. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-two years, Frances Riddle Gay, and a son, Charles Riddle Gay. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Karen Gay Callaway, and her husband, Joseph Newton Callaway, II, of Winterville, NC; his daughter, Kimberley Gay Agnew, and her husband, Fred Jeffrey Agnew, of Gainesville, GA; his son, Mack Lee Gay, III, and his wife, Kristie Echols Gay, of Rocky Mount; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Scott Agnew and his wife, Whitney, of Vestavia Hills, AL; Joseph Newton Callaway, III, and his wife, Erin, of Boston, MA; Evan Benjamin Callaway and his fiancé, Sophia Arabadjis, of Santa Barbara, CA; Gay Anne Agnew Haynes and her husband, Landry, of Alpharetta, GA; Dayna Agnew Bennett and her husband, Jordan, of Cumming, GA; Elizabeth Corbett Gay of Raleigh; and Grace Caroline Gay of Raleigh; as well as six great-grandchildren and one sister, Frances Ward Gay of Alexandria, VA. Mack served in the Naval Air Reserve for five years and graduated from North Carolina State University in 1955 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He began his long and productive engineering career as Assistant City Engineer for the City of Rocky Mount. In 1958 he joined Mr. E. L. Hunley in the practice of civil engineering and surveying. After Mr. Hunley retired, the firm became known as Mack Gay Associates, P.A. Mack was licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) and a Professional Land Surveyor (P.L.S.), and made his impact on the Rocky Mount area with such projects as the construction of Interstate 95 through Nash County, Tarrytown Mall, and Candlewood Subdivision. He was also a partner in a utility construction company, BG&R Construction Co., Inc. and a real estate development company, Eaglesmere, Inc. Mack retired in 2002. Mack was a quiet and kind individual who dearly loved his family, Wolfpack football, and his Edgecombe County farm, Flagmarsh. He discovered a love of painting at the age of 85. A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 1, from 2:00 until 4:00 pm at Mack’s beloved Flagmarsh Farm, 1200 Pitt Road, Rocky Mount, NC.
