Long Beach on Wednesday released detailed demographic data about its monkeypox cases, which shows the majority of cases are among gay men, and the largest portion of cases has been identified in the Downtown and Alamitos Beach areas.

Almost all the city’s monkeypox cases, 88 of 89, are among men, with the gender identification of the remaining case unclear. Roughly 52% of people infected are Latino, 28% are White and 12% are Black—which largely tracks with the demographics of the city.

So far three people have been hospitalized due to monkeypox, which is spread from person to person through direct contact with body fluids or lesions, or contaminated materials such as clothing or linens, and through respiratory droplets through prolonged face-to-face contact, according to health officials.

Roughly 70% of those infected in Long Beach are gay, lesbian or “same-gender loving,” according to the city’s new monkeypox dashboard. People who are bisexual account for 10% of cases, and heterosexuals account for 9%. Another 9% were among people with unknown sexual orientation.

Cases are spread fairly evenly throughout the city’s geographic regions, with 25% of cases in the 90802 ZIP code, which includes Downtown and Alamitos Beach; 15% in North Long Beach’s 90805 ZIP code and 10% in the Belmont Shore/Naples ZIP code of 90803.

The city has so far administered 5,025 doses of monkeypox vaccine, including first and second doses.

The state Department of Public Health, meanwhile, is reporting 3,897 total cases of monkeypox statewide, with at least 123 requiring hospitalization.
