Lil Nas X Slams Fan Who Jokingly Called Him ‘Gay Person in Terrible Outfit’ – Newsweek
Lil Nas X was not impressed by a Halloween costume featuring his image, seemingly mocking his style, or the associated sarcastic comments of a Twitter user.
The “Old Town Road” rapper took to Twitter to slam the person who had bought the outfit that apparently showed “a gay person in a terrible outfit.”
Next to the label was a photo of Lil Nas X in an orange print turtle neck, matching pants and silver sunglasses.
The Twitter user who had bought the costume posted a photo of it to Twitter, writing in the caption “just got my halloween costume,” along a coy laughing face emoji.
Lil Nas X, who is normally known for his irreverent humor, revealed his late grandmothers had made him the outfit.
He wrote: “[sic] it’s funny until u realize both of my dead grandmothers stitched this outfit together by hand right before passing and i wore it to go and donate to a children’s hospital after volunteering at a soup kitchen for the homeless. not so@funny now is it?”
The rapper then reverted to his funny self and photoshopped the image of him on the costume into an image of a soup kitchen in a follow-up tweet, which may reveal he was joking all along.
“[sic] and for those saying this is fake. here’s me at the soup kitchen please get educated before u talk,” he wrote.
Lil Nas X opened up about losing his grandmother during his rise to fame, describing it as one of the most painful experiences of his life.
“So much happened during my rise,” he told Variety. “You know, drugs and murders. And my grandmother passing [in 2018]—she was the first person close to me who died. It was devastating. And it made me a hypochondriac: I’d wake up, heart racing. It was scary.”
He lived with his grandmother after his parents split and his father got full custody of him.
Lil Nas X previously opened up on his mother’s struggles with drug addiction.
“I never really talk about my mom. She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better – things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love,” he told Variety.
His dad, Robert Stafford, defended the musician after he was accused of not doing enough to help his mom.
Stafford wrote on Instagram that Lil Nas X was “the greatest kid a parent can be BLESSED with.”
He added: “Although his mom is in a struggle with an addiction she’s STILL a QUEEN and he goes through great lengths to make sure we’re taking care of.
“Those who have family members and friends dealing with addiction understands that there ain’t enough money you can throw at this situation to make it right.
“I don’t usually address personal issues publicly but felt like this need to be. And to those out there trying to create a false story, you won’t prosper.”
Born Montero Lamar Hill, he became the first out gay artist to have a number one song on the Billboard charts. That song, “Old Town Road” propelled him to stardom and he went on to score six Grammy nominations this year.
