Letter: Putting LGBTQ issues, fight into perspective | News, Sports … – Daily Herald

Left and right nowadays, we’re seeing representation of the LGBTQ+ community unlike ever before. For those in this community, this is exciting and hopeful, and indicates a brighter future, especially through the threat of legal action imposed that attacks their rights. For some, however, this feels wrong, and like “too much at once”. Let me make something absolutely clear, though- gay and trans representation does little to counteract the mounting number of hate crimes against LGBTQ people, or suicide rates amongst LGBTQ youth. Gay marriage has only been legal in every state for seven years, and even that is only in word. So the next time you feel the need to get upset over that boy who is attracted to another boy, or someone who doesn’t conform to the gender binary, instead think of the gay people across the globe being attacked just for existing.
