Kim Petras Wants Everyone to Know the Gay Clubs Raised Her

Kim Petras has made her mark in the music world with the success of her hit song “Unholy” alongside fellow queer artist Sam Smith. Petras and Smith became the first trans and non-binary artists to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 because of it, and now they’ve received a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the upcoming 2023 Grammy Awards.

During a recent interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host said that Petras had “set a historical precedent for LGBTQ+ representation,” to which the audience cheered and Petras smiled and thanked them.

“It’s so crazy,” she said. “I feel like gay clubs raised me, and pop music? No one loves pop music more than gay clubs.”

She then turned her attention to the audience and said, “Honestly, I owe everything I have to the gays in Bushwick,” which refers to the renowned queer neighborhood in Brooklyn near where the late-night show is filmed.

“I used to perform on tables in bars and whatever, and now I’m nominated for a Grammy. It’s so crazy because those [gay clubs] were always the places where I just, like, felt like I belonged in there, where pop music and fun music is celebrated.”

While discussing her surprise at the nomination, she added, “It’s a very gay song, so thank you, Grammys. I really appreciate it.”

Petras also discussed meeting Madonna following her performance with Smith at Saturday Night Live.

“We talked and I was, like, really obliterated drunk and I was just like, ‘You’re my queen!’ It was the after-party and she just showed up. I’m sure she thinks I’m crazy, but I was like ‘You are the blueprint for everybody and you need to know this!’”

Queen Madge then asked for a picture, which Petras posted to her Instagram.

Tune in to the 65th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 5 at 4 pm.
