Today we remember Joe Kittell, perhaps the finest bowler in the Williamsport area during the 1930s. He was the first area bowler to roll a sanctioned 300 — on May 9, 1935, more than 18 years before a second area bowler accomplished that feat — and the first area bowler to record a sanctioned 800 series — an 825 on March 17, 1938, 17 years before a second area bowler accomplished that feat. Kittell’s 825 series was the 13th highest series ever recorded in the nation at that time, and stood as the local association record for over 34 years.

He recorded the highest seasonal average for the local area several times between 1927 and 1934. In 1934, he became the first area bowler to average above 200, when he posted a 208 average that stood as the local association record for 26 years.

At the 1927 ABC National Tournament, Kittell teamed with Tommy Barger Sr. to finish 7th in the doubles event. This was the highest finish by any area bowlers in any ABC National Tournament event up until that time, a record which stood until 1962. In 1967, Kittell was inducted into the local Association Hall of Fame as a Charter Member.

Hope to see you on the lanes.
