KCC funding to support county’s top sports performers – KCC Media Hub

A number of sports men and women with ambitions to be selected to represent Great Britain at future Olympic and Paralympic Games are to be supported in their training with funding from Kent County Council.

The 15 sportsmen and women represent a range of sports and include disabled and non-disabled performers. They are all from Kent and have been nominated and recognised by their sport’s national governing body. Each receives £1,000 towards their training, equipment and coaching.

This is the 14th year that KCC has provided this support to top sports performers. Previous recipients have included double Olympian, European and World Athletics medallist Jack Green and Steve Brown, a Paralympian and the GB wheelchair rugby captain at London 2012.

This year there are also a number of athletes who are aiming for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham including: Tom Bosworth (athletics), James Hall (gymnastics), Courtney Tulloch (gymnastics), Ross Wilson (table tennis) and Will Bayley (table tennis).

In addition, Millie Knight (Alpine skiing), who achieved a bronze medal at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing, will also be one of those receiving support. All of whom have been supported by Kent County Council in their sporting careers to date.

Mike Hill, Cabinet Member for Community and Regulatory Services at Kent County Council said: “I am delighted that we are once again able to support a number of Kent’s talented sports performers with targeted grants and hope that this support will assist them in their future ambitions to be successful at major sporting events on the international stage.”

Liz Davidson, Partnership Director for Active Kent and Medway (formerly Kent Sport) said: “To be able to support athletes in their preparations for a home Commonwealth Games is fantastic. We look forward to seeing a number of them performing in Birmingham this summer and inspiring talented young athletes across the county to follow in their footsteps.”

The two major aims of the support for talented performers:

 To assist Kent’s talented performers (non-disabled and disabled) who have the most potential to compete and achieve at a high level.

 To promote Kent’s talented performers as positive role models within the county.

In order to make the final grant award decisions we have worked closely with the national charity SportsAid, which receives nominations of athletes for funding awards each year from National Governing Bodies of Sport. http://www.sportsaid.org.uk/
