Karl Anthony Towns: Thought “Rudy Gay” before learning trade details – Dunking with Wolves
Apparently, there are plenty of “Rudy”s playing in the NBA right now, or so it seems based on the recent story shared by Minnesota Timberwolves Karl-Anthony Towns. And unlike so many categories of people, not all Rudys were made the same, at least in terms of how they fit on the Minnesota Timberwolves roster.
As KAT related the story, he was oblivious to the latest NBA news, having shut off his smartphone and just returned to his hotel room from working out in the gym. His girlfriend, Jordyn Woods, asked him if he had heard the news about the Minnesota Timberwolves. Since his phone was off, he hadn’t heard anything.
So Jordyn shared: “You got Rudy! Your team got Rudy!”
To that announcement, Towns was still confused about the player so he asked whether the Timberwolves had acquired Rudy Gay.

Thankfully, the Timberwolves had traded for Rudy Gobert, not Rudy Gay.
Ironically, both center Rudy Gobert and forward Rudy Gay were under contract for the Utah Jazz at the time. So the confusion was an honest mistake.
I suppose one of the surprises from this humorous story is the hush-hush nature of how it all went down. Karl-Anthony Towns is the guy who just signed on the dotted line, the star of the team. And for the team to make such a significant move and KAT to be oblivious to what was about to go down is a bit curious.
I’m not suggesting that the team needed permission. I’m simply a bit surprised that the trade will have a major impact on Towns. Not only will he now be playing directly alongside Gobert, but the arrival of Gobert will force KAT to the power forward role.
In any case, it’s a funny tale of confused identities. Just the kind of chortle to start off a Sunday morning.
