Kansas City Chiefs Analysis

We haven’t seen the Patrick Mahomes we’re used to this season, and his stats convey a decline in efficiency and an increase in volatility. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that his ten interceptions stand behind only Sam Darnold and Joe Burrow while he ranks 19th among starters in passer rating and 24th in yards per pass attempt. The Chiefs’ new-look offensive line has done a solid job, ranking 10th in run-blocking and 8th in pass-blocking per Football Outsiders’ efficiency metrics. However, Kansas City hasn’t accomplished enough in the run game, and defenses have been able to take away Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce somewhat schematically. The offense is arguably due for regression, as well, as they lead the NFL with a 52.4% third-down conversion rate. No team has finished over 50% on third downs since the Saints in 2011.

Kansas City’s defense has been one of the worst in the NFL as it ranks 28th in defensive DVOA, but it’s starting to turn a corner in recent weeks. It ranked as one of the worst in the league in all metrics a couple of weeks ago, but it has held its opponents to 16 points per game over the past four weeks. Context is essential there – they played the Giants, Titans, Washington, and Jordan Love-led Packers over that stretch – but it’s still significant as Kansas City’s defense continues to improve. The addition of Melvin Ingram has been an essential boost to the pass rush, while Chris Jones has been able to move back to his more natural position. Willie Gay Jr.’s return to the lineup has been significant as well, while cornerbacks Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton getting healthy have been immense.

Las Vegas Raiders Analysis

The Raiders were held to just 16 points against the Giants last week, and while some of that is excusable with the team going on an East Coast road trip after the tragic Henry Ruggs incident, but some of it has to be concerning moving forward. Henry Ruggs didn’t have crazy volume numbers, but his constant presence as a deep-ball threat with the ability to take the top off the defense changed the way teams played against the Raiders. DeSean Jackson can help replace some of that as the 34-year-old veteran still has wheels, but it’s a tough ask after joining the team just this week. Derek Carr has been excellent at times this season as he ranks third with 2,565 passing yards and has completed 67.3% of his passes, but his inconsistency has hurt the team. Darren Waller has been dealing with knee injuries for the past month and hadn’t gone over 60 yards in over a month before last week.

Defensively, things have been much better for the Raiders this season thanks to the addition of Gus Bradley as defensive coordinator. The trio of Maxx Crosby, Yannick Ngakoue, and Carl Nassib has been excellent, and they have helped the Raiders field a much more potent pass rush this season. The addition of Casey Hayward Jr. at cornerback has been massive, as well, as he’s having a dominant season in coverage. I’ve also been very impressed with Nate Hobbs, a rookie fifth-round pick who has been excellent in slot coverage. Las Vegas has allowed just 206.9 passing yards per game, the fifth-fewest in the NFL, and 6.3 yards per attempt, the second-fewest. The Raiders have also allowed just a 38.3% third-down rate, the eleventh-lowest in the league. Las Vegas has the defensive pieces to slow down the Chiefs like many teams have this season.

With a 52-point over-under, this game has one of the highest points totals of the week and should provide plenty of exciting fantasy value. The Chiefs’ side of the offense will give the most exciting prospects, but Derek Carr is a sneaky fantasy option as the Chiefs have allowed the second-most fantasy points to quarterbacks. This secondary is very capable of taking away one of either Tyreek Hill or Travis Kelce, and I’m not projecting that they both have massive games, so I’d be looking to build two lineups, one with each of them. Zay Jones and Bryan Edwards are intriguing dart throws as DeSean Jackson gets accustomed to his new team.
