JoJo Siwa and her girlfriend talk their ‘instant’ connection, coming out in joint interview – USA TODAY
JoJo Siwa is sharing more about how she met her girlfriend Kylie Prew, coming out to the world, and even their “first fight over a Lego.”
The two opened up about their relationship as they approach eight months of dating in a joint interview with Siwa’s mom, Jessalynn, for an episode Saturday of her podcast “Success with Jess.”
The internet superstar, 18, who publicly came out as a member of the LGBTQ community in January, said she immediately bonded with Prew, 18, when they met on a cruise.
“We just became instant like this,” Siwa gushed while holding up crossed fingers. “Like I had a big secret at the time that I wasn’t supposed to tell anybody and I told her within 10 minutes of meeting her.”
The couple opened up about how they were just “best friends” for over a year, but eventually realized there was more to their relationship. In fact, Prew told Siwa on the cruise ship that she had a boyfriend, but Siwa “laughed.”
“I was like, ‘Dude, you’re gay’ … ‘I thought you were gay.’ And she was like, ‘No I’m so straight I have a boyfriend.’ And I literally go ‘OK come talk to me in 6 months,’ ” Siwa told with Prew’s permission.
Six months later, Prew called Siwa to tell her she is bisexual. Again, Siwa said, “No bro, you’re gay, call me in six months.” Six months later, Prew was her girlfriend, Siwa joked.
They eventually came out to each other, and to their friends and family, and both admitted it was scary. The “Dance Moms” alum said that even though she knew her parents would be supportive, she feared rejection more from them and her closest friends than from the rest of the world.
“The world is the world to me. No matter what, 50% of people are going to like you and 50% are going to hate you, but I need the 10 people around me to like me,” she said.

On Jan. 8, Prew asked Siwa if she would be her girlfriend, the singer and actress shared.
But they do have the occasional fight – their first one being when Prew wanted to build a Lego but Siwa wasn’t interested. Siwa assumed Prew was mad at her which led to an argument that quickly resolved.
“No matter what, never go to sleep mad … always end with an ‘I love you,’ ” Siwa said. “Always end with ‘I’m frustrated but tomorrow it won’t matter.’ “
Siwa, born Joelle Joanie Siwa, rose to fame after appearing as a contestant on “Dance Moms” spinoff “Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition” before landing a role as a “Dance Moms” series regular in 2015.
With her giant hair bows, sparkly outfits and larger-than-life personality, she quickly became a beloved internet personality, boasting millions of followers on her social media accounts. She stars in upcoming movie “The J Team,” streaming on Paramount+ Sept. 3.

In April, Siwa opened up to People magazine about her sexuality, saying she usually refers to herself as “gay because it just kind of covers it or queer because I think the keyword is cool,” but added that she would also identify as pansexual.
“I like queer,” Siwa said. “Technically I would say that I am pansexual because that’s how I have always been my whole life… my human is my human.”
Siwa went public with her relationship with Prew on social media in February, sharing photos of the two holding hands and embracing.
“I’ve been the happiest I have ever been!” Siwa wrote.
