Johnson’s fall proves that our system works | Comment | The Sunday Times – The Times
Boris Johnson announced his intention to resign as prime minister on Thursday

Amid the wreckage of this week’s events, there is some cause for optimism. The system — albeit informal — ultimately won.
The behaviour of the prime minister has been such that many were quite reasonably worried that the unwritten rules of our constitution were no longer fit for purpose. It has taken too long, but the downfall of the PM does at least show that an individual like him, who seemed determined to push reasonable behaviour to the limit, can be defeated and disposed of quickly.
One hopes that we never find ourselves in this position again. But we can at least be assured that the informal rules of hard politics have won out in the end.
