He wrote: ‘Gay Byrne hosting the 1993 Housewife of the Year competition. Turns out Father Ted was a documentary…’

Irish Twitter users reacted to the comparison, with one person writing: ‘That’s the beauty of Fr Ted. You can relate everything back to your own life in Ireland. Unreal show. I wonder sometimes do non-Irish get Fr Ted to the same level.’

Another said: ‘Dear God, housewife of the year! They wouldn’t get away with now.’

A third person added: ‘Here, they all seem like some craic. Especially this hero,’ while posting a photo of one of the women on the show.

Meanwhile, others weren’t so happy about the video, with many claiming that the show was ‘sexist’ even for its time. One Twitter user commented: ”93, that was even sexist for its time. I used to always hate s**t like that.’

Another person wrote: ‘Could you imagine airing that now, the uproar,’ while a third added: ‘Good clean male chauvinism. Sure it never did any harm – to men.’
