Interview with the Vampire finally hits screens and it’s gay as hell: ‘I’m emotionally devastated’ – PinkNews

AMC has dropped its new TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire based on the novel by Anne Rice and it’s gay as hell.
The new series stars Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac and Sam Reid as Lestat De Lioncourt, as Louis recounts his chaotic vampire relationship with Lestat to journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian).
The TV series is the latest adaptation of Anne Rice’s immensely popular and gothic series, which first came out in 1976 and was later turned into a film in 1994 starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.
As the story progresses, Lestat and Louis adopt a vampire girl, Claudia (Bailey Bass), and we witness the horror unfurl from there.
Unlike Pitt and Cruise’s version of the story, the new series is unapologetic in its queerness with enough gay vampire husbands content to please all the vying fans.

Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes about the addition of the queer angle and casting Black people in previously white roles, Bass said: “The truth is, Anne Rice was the most pro-LGBTQIA, pro-diverse person.
“She was for all of that, she just happened to write these characters as white roles. But their essence is here. I think what’s nice is it’s in this fantasy world…”
While Anderson added: “I hope that people see themselves in these monsters, to be honest. We don’t shy away from the camp, and from the gore, and the sauciness. I think Anne Rice’s monsters are the most human monsters you will ever encounter.
“The hope is that people are going to watch this and see themselves, or see their own relationships, or see they’re not weird and they’re not outsiders. Or that they are outsiders and recognise that’s what makes us remarkable.”
Certainly back in 2000, Rice addressed the homoerotic vibes in her work in an interview: “It’s important to me as a writer to let everything come spontaneously and not think too much about it.
“I don’t sit down and think, ‘I’m going to write about gay characters or I’m going to write about a homoerotic theme’. It just keeps happening in my work pretty naturally.”
The series does not shy away from intimate moments both emotionally and physically between our two leads, and Reid and Anderson even recounted the tale of how one particularly steamy scene had to be filmed with a sea-saw manned by “four sweaty men”
Fans have been extremely happy by the queer twist and have been shouting their joy on social media. “Lestat seems so peaceful. He’s so happy. They’re both finally living this moment. The horror, the fear, the hesitation… I’m emotionally devastated. They did it,” one fan wrote.
While another gushed about the sweet “coffin pillow talk” Lestat and Louis have after an argument. And others simply put all their love into fan art of the two characters.
