‘I Didn’t Say That’ – The Top 5 Late Late Show Moments Of 2022 – Extra.ie

The Late Late Show, often known as The Late Late, is the world’s second longest-running late-night talk show, following America’s The Tonight Show.

The show was first broadcast on Friday, July 6, 1962, and has been going from strength to strength since, accumulating a major fanbase over the years.

The late Gay Byrne hosted the show from its inception until May 21, 1999, and was followed by Pat Kenny who was at the helm of the show for 10 years before Ryan Tubridy took over in 2009, and remains as the current host.

In 2020, Miriam O’Callaghan became the first female host of the Friday night talk show, when Ryan was out with symptoms of you know what.

5 Derry Girls star Jamie Lee O’Donnell brands Tubridy ‘misogynistic’

One of the most talked about Late Late Show moments of the year was likely when Derry Girls star Jamie Lee O’Donnell (Michelle Mallon) joined Ryan on the show to talk about all things Derry Girls.

All was going well between the pair as they chatted about the final season of the hit BBC show, but things quickly went downhill when Ryan asked Jamie Lee her age.

A seemingly innocent question from the host, however, the actress clearly didn’t like it as she jokingly answered that she was ‘117.’

Unfortunately, Ryan didn’t take the hint, and asked Jamie Lee once again what age she was, which provoked the Derry native to share her feelings on the question, branding it ‘very misogynistic.’

‘You wouldn’t ask a man the same question,’ Jamie Lee told Ryan, who said he would have asked the same question to her male co-star as he noted he asked the question due to the nature of her character on the show — a schoolgirl.

The interaction had viewers taking to social media to revel in the awkwardness, but also made a large divide between those who felt Jamie Lee blew things out of proportion, and those who felt her opinions were well justified.

4. Late Late Show audience fashion

Viewers of the Friday night chat show were left slightly puzzled one Friday evening as the audience presented a hilarious mystery when many donned similar outfits for their night out.

As Kellie Harrington and Daniel O’Donnell led the line-up, it appeared that a number of members of the audience stole the show with the exact same dress.

Viewers took to Twitter wondering if it was part of an upcoming segment.

As it happened it wasn’t part of any Late Late Show segment, and was pure coincidence. Responding to the confusion on his RTÉ Radio 1 show the following week, Tubridy revealed it was just one of those things. Pic: RTE

One person said: ‘Why are most of the women in the audience wearing similar dresses?? Am I imaging this?’

‘On last Friday’s Late Late Show there was a lot of fuss about how nearly half the women in the audience seemed to be wearing the same thing.

‘I don’t know if you saw but sure enough, RSVP pointed it out as well, “RTE viewers left trying to solve the mystery in the audience about the dresses.”‘

3. Charlie Bird shares health update

In October, much loved former journalist Charlie Bird was on the Late Late Show, speaking about how he had ‘finally come to terms‘ with his Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis.

The former RTE star was diagnosed with the disease in October 2021, and has raised millions for charity — including the incredibly successful Climb With Charlie, which raised more than €3 million for both Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House.

Charlie shared a poignant update on his condition, revealing he had come to terms with his illness, and adding that he would be ‘incredibly lucky’ to survive another year as he approaches one year since his diagnosis.

The veteran journalist said: ‘I have finally come to terms with my illness.

‘I understand there is no silver bullet and I have just to get on with my life. In other words, I fully understand what is ahead of me.

‘If I am really lucky, I may survive another year. I can still walk and when people see me out walking, they tell me I am looking great, but the horrible truth of my MND with my voice now fully gone, my swallow has deteriorated and every time I sit down to eat, it is now a challenge to get through the meal without a coughing fit.

‘That is very scary.’

2. Kellie Harrington & John C. Reilly’s unusual yet brilliant double act

Olympic champion Kellie Harrington and Hollywood star John C. Reilly led the line-up for the St Patrick’s Day Special, and won the hearts of the nation with their double act.

Kellie was the grand marshal of the Dublin St Patrick’s Day parade, along with fellow Olympian Ellen Keane while John was the international guest of honour on the day.

Reminiscing about the day, Kellie revealed that as a youngster she didn’t know the parade went beyond O’Connell Street.

‘I used to watch it up in O’Connell Street and once it leaves, you just assume that’s it. So by the time I got to Dawson Street today, I was wrecked,’ the boxer laughed.

It wasn’t long before Kellie was convinced into singing a verse of Grace by Tubridy, with her voice being highly praised on social media.

She was followed by John, who seemed to be having a great time on the show, with a rendition of Raglan Road. Similarly, his rendition and vocals were applauded on Twitter.

1. Brenda Fricker puts Ryan Tubridy in his place

Oscar winner Brenda Fricker won much praise for her honesty regarding her agoraphobia and her rescue dog when she appeared on the Late Late Show in September.

The acting legend was on the show to chat about her latest project Holding — the new ITV crime drama adapted from Graham Norton’s novel.

Brenda had viewers in stitches with her quick retorts and witty responses to Tubridy.

According to the host the last time Brenda was on the show, she had mentioned she was writing a book – a claim that Brenda denied before immediately demanding that Ryan get back to the topic of discussion.

‘Am, I didn’t say that to you.

‘Can we talk about Holding now? That’s why I’m here,’ the actress said.

In fairness to Tubridy, he backtracked well and hinted that Brenda wasn’t ready to talk about her potential project, which prompted her to agree and reveal ‘there’s talks of memories, but you said it so seriously that you frightened me.’

Viewers of the episode, and fans of the star took to Twitter to reveal that Tubridy had ‘met his match here,’ and also added that Brenda would ‘buy and sell anyone, sharp as nails.’
