Howell school parents, kids receive email with anti-gay comment – Daily Press & Argus

HOWELL – Howell Public Schools students and parents received an email Monday many considered to be homophobic.

The email included a survey and read, “Whoopsie, looks like someone forgot to make this uneditable,” and included a reference to “Leviticus 20:30: If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.”

Depending upon the Bible version, Leviticus 20 lays out a number of prohibitions, including for such things as adultery, bestiality, cursing a person’s parents, incest, witchcraft and eating certain animals.

Howell Public Schools Director of Communications Tom Gould provided a statement on the incident.

“Today, a student mental health survey was shared with students at Howell High School,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, the manner in which the survey was shared allowed any student to edit the form. A student took advantage of this and edited the survey to include an inappropriate message that was viewable to all students.

“As soon as the school was notified of this, editing rights were revoked, the survey was closed, and the email was deleted from accounts,” the statement continued. “The school has identified the student responsible for editing the survey and will take actions according to the district’s student code of conduct.”

Gould could not be reached Tuesday morning for further comment.
