‘House of Gucci’ True Story – How did Maurizio Gucci die? – menshealth.com
House of Gucci has easily been one of 2021’s most anticipated new films—and now it’s finally out in theaters everywhere. Starring Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, and Jeremy Irons, the film follows Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga) and her husband Maurizio (Driver) during their tumultuous marriage, his handling of the family company, and the events leading up to Maurizio’s murder—by a hitman Patrizia hired.

“They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system,” she says. “Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything, but there is a border line that cannot be crossed.”
Even if the film isn’t entirely accurate, it’s still a compelling story of love and murder that’ll probably end up on a lot of ‘Best of’ lists for 2021, alongside Scott’s other true story blockbuster The Last Duel, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver (again), and Ben Affleck. (And both could also wind up in contention for a few Academy Awards.) Similar to the truth behind that film, there’s still more to the story than what’s in a few hours of a film.
Here’s everything we know about the true story behind House of Gucci.
Is House of Gucci based on a true story?
Yes, it is. According to Oprah Daily, Maurizio Gucci was the grandson of Gucci’s founder Guccio Gucci, and his wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was an Italian socialite. The two married at 24 and had two daughters. They had a happy marriage for over a decade, until Maurizio’s father passed away in 1983.
Gucci then inherited a 50 percent stake in the fashion company and became its chairman. According to Forbes, Maurizio Gucci was determined to consolidate power and take away his family’s board seats.
He lost the company millions, and Reggiani lost faith in her husband as he threatened their reputation as a family and a brand. In 1985, the couple divorced, after Gucci claimed he had to leave for a business trip.
By 1993, Maurizio Gucci sold his shares to an investment banking firm Investcorp, ending the family’s control of the business. He also met another woman, Paola Franchi. Reggiani around the same time received a $1 million divorce settlement. Still, Reggiani was bitter about her marriage, and how her ex-husband handled the company.
In a phone message played in her eventual trial, Reggiani expressed her disgust to him. “You’ve reached the extreme limit of making yourself despised by your daughters who no longer want to see you to forget the trauma. You are a deformed outgrowth, you are a painful appendix that all of us want to forget,” she says. For you, hell is yet to come.”
As The Guardian reports, Reggiani went around asking “everyone” to kill her husband on her behalf, “even the local shopkeeper.” Eventually, Reggiani’s friend, Pina Auriemma, found a porter, a debt-ridden pizzeria owner named Benedetto Ceraulo, and a third accomplice named Orazio Cicala willing to perform the assassination. On March 25, 1995, 46-year-old Maurizio Gucci was shot and killed.
Two years later, police began investigating the porter, Ivano Savioni, who was looking for another hitman, this time to go after Reggiani. An undercover cop pretended to be interested in the job and secretly recorded the conversation, leading to Reggiani and her accomplices’ arrests on January 31.
In November 1998, Ceraulo was given a life sentence, Reggiani and Cicala were each sentenced to 29 years, while Auriemma and Savioni received 25- and 26-year sentences. All sentences were reduced, with Reggiani only serving 14 years. Reggiani, now 72, says she wants to put the past behind her.
On an Italian television show, she said, ““I have two daughters, and I don’t like that they relive their father’s situation.”
