LAKE PLACID — With playoffs a little over a week away, the Lake Placid cross country teams were strong in their final regular season meet at home on Tuesday.

The Blue Bomber girls swept past AuSable Valley, Plattsburgh and Ticonderoga by identical 15-50 scores to improve to 9-4. The Lake Placid boys earned two wins while also losing in a close race to Plattsburgh 27-28. The boys beat AuSable Valley 15-50 and Ticonderoga 21-34 to improve to 7-7.

Lake Placid senior Andrew Scanio, who had missed a few races early in the season due to an injury, was the top runner in the boys race, finishing with a time of 18 minutes and 6 seconds.

“He’s getting back to himself and it was his senior meet, so it was cool,” Blue Bombers coach Mel Frazer said. “He’s been working hard and training again.”

Lake Placid’s Aidan Fay, who raced side-by-side with Scanio, claimed second place in 18:11. Collin Francis (20:22) had a solid race for the Blue Bombers, finishing in eighth place.

Lake Placid’s Kenny Lawrence and Ethan Cash rounded out the top five runners, finishing in 15th and 16th, respectively.

On the girls side, the Blue Bombers claimed five of the top 10 spots, with senior Lilly Rother winning the race in 21:44.

“It was nice that two seniors took the win,” Frazer said.

Rother was followed by teammates Kai McKinnon (23:09) in second place overall and Harley Cohen (24:49) in fourth. The Blue Bombers were rounded out by Jenna Fay (26:39) in seventh place and Holly Erenstone (28:15) in eighth.

While it was a dominating win for the girls team, Frazer noted that a few Ticonderoga girls, who will race against Lake Placid in sectional, didn’t finish the race on Tuesday.

“So to see where we were against Ti is very hard. But overall it was a good senior race,” Frazer said.

Saranac Lake

With the Champlain Valley Athletic regular season title on the line, the Saranac Lake boys cross country team put on a dominating performance on Tuesday at the Cadyville Recreation Park.

The Red Storm boys defeated the Peru Nighthawks 17-38 and the Saranac Central Chiefs 18-39. The Saranac Lake girls fell to the Chiefs and the Nighthawks, by scores of 21-38 and 24-35, respectively.

In the boys’ race, five of the top seven runners were from Saranac Lake, with Sam Ash leading the way in first place in 16:54. The Red Storm’s Jake Kollmer took second place in 17:28, while Sam Bickford was fourth overall in 17:43.

Saranac Lake seniors Aiden Hesseltine (18:14) and Morgan Martin (18:19) finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively to round out the top five runners for the team.

In the girl’s race, Saranac Central’s Sienna Boulds was the overall winner in 19:57. The Red Storm’s top finisher was Addi Ash in seventh place (22:19). Ash was followed by her teammates Phoebe Peer (22:23) and Astacia Bruno (22:48) in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Saranac Lake was rounded out by Sabine Deckenberger (23:46) in 14th place and Brooklynn Shumway (23:47) in 15th.

Following the meet, the Red Storm boys improved to 17-0, while the girls fell to 11-3. Both teams will finish the regular season at home against Northeastern Clinton, Moriah/Boquet Valley and Lake Placid next Tuesday. The race will start at 4:30 p.m.
